Coming to Ole Miss for the first time

Hi all - I'm a Northwestern grad and also a UCLA fan living in Los Angeles. But more than that, I'm just a fan of college football. I've long heard that there's no better place than Ole Miss to attend a game, along with experiencing the tailgating atmosphere in The Grove. So, I've decided to take my son to a game in Oxford this fall. I'm very excited about it!

I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for me, such as how early to get to campus and the best way to get invited to someone's tailgate in The Grove!

Thanks in advance!

A few years ago the game day atmosphere would have been some better, but it would also be more difficult to find an affordable ticket. Having said that, it is still worth the trip. I would suggest booking a room yesterday. Oxford is probably already booked, but you may have luck in Tupelo, New Albany, or Pontotoc. If you don't mind the drive down from Memphis the day of the game I would book a night in the Peabody.

If I remember correctly it is like a mini land rush in which people start setting up their grove spot @ 6am. Try to take in a game that is late afternoon or early evening so you can enjoy the day at your leisure. There are several good restaurants in the downtown area, the double decker bus are a free ride ( last time I checked). Z is correct, just walk up to a good group of folk and ask where is a good place to grab a bite and there's a good chance they will stick a plate in your hands.

One thing I might add to Hightower, is vrbo for a place. We got a small townhouse there a couple years ago which is great for 2-3 people. I dk if about air B&B but you might look. Gives a little more insight to Oxford too.

One more thing, you didn't say which game, but if it's not Bama, you can always try the visiting teams ticket office as some teams travel worse than others. I've had success with that.

The sausage and bacon along with eggs usually starts cooking between 6 and 7 am in the grove. Doesn't really matter what time the game is. The team walks through the walk of champions about 2 hours before kickoff so you def want to see that. If you can go to an afternoon game and get there between 8-9 you will probably get all of the grove you want. Just walk around and if you see people having a good time, stop by their tent and tell them who you are and why you are there.

Thanks so much for all of your responses. I got a hotel room in Batesville. Seem ok (I hope!).

Next question: I'll be renting a car. Any suggestions on where to park when I come into Oxford?

The old mall where the Malco theater is. You can take the shuttle from there to the grove

To add some context to pratt's recommendation, as you are staying in Batesville, you will be travelling to Oxford via Hwy 6 E, about 25 miles; you will take the Jackson Avenue exit (approximately a mile-ish after entering the city limits-won't miss it). The parking lot/old mall/theater referenced will be on your left and one of the entrances to campus will be on your right several traffic lights down that road.

You may also want to look online for a parking pass-depending on the game, you may be able to snag one at an affordable rate. Only way to park on campus on gameday is to either live on campus or have said pass.

and to that I'd add that you try to come over during the day on Friday to "do the Square" possibly lunch or dinner. If you have the time, the town of Oxford is half the deal and riding the bus to and from the game alone, won't allow you to get the total package. Safe travels!

We are coming for the South Carolina game. Is there any place to park and tailgate near the stadium other than The Grove? While I would love to experience that atmosphere, I can't afford the prices the company's get for a set-up.

I dk if I would try to set up and do my own thing if I were you AND get the Grove experience too. You may be dining out of the action so far you may as well stay home. I think I'd carry a "disposable" cooler and walk til I found a spot near the Grove. I don't mean to be wise but I don't know what I'd do myself in your situation. Hope whatever you do works!

“Walk of Champions”????

Archie and teammates gonna dress out or just stroll through there wearing golf shirts and khakis?

You are literally too stupid to have a conversation with. You should ask for a refund from whatever university gave you a diploma.

In all the posts this idiot has produced please tell what you read to indicate he has a high school diploma much less a college degree?

Get better fans instead of bandwagon fans and they will come.
Like him or not, the fans were buying into Freeze' program imho. He had recruits from everywhere looking at OM. HeDID beat Bama twice and really should have the his last game. The investigation and his demise took the wind out of many a sail, again imho. Luke doesn't inspire the fans with his rhetoric and or demeanor so my guess is a degree of apathy is around rightly or wrongly.

I see where Vitter is blocking folks on twitter who dare to be critical
of him.

Vitter and Bjork. Larry, Curly, I am sure Moe is somewhere in the administration.

And they wonder why people make fun of OM

He's a very weak choice. I fear whoever's doing the picking, are much weaker themselves.
