A school signs a guy for $50k a year out of HS as a linebacker but after a couple of years, it is obvious he can't handle the position. However, he is a "terror" on Special Teams. A Coach tells him that he can either take his chances by going into the Portal or stay there but only be paid $25K since his versatility is limited.

A Five Star HS QB is paid $500K to sign with your school. He just doesn't work out and is relegated to back-up status. He enters the Portal and doesn't attract much attention. He goes bank to your school and asks for reinstatement. Your Coach takes him back because he knows the Offense ,
is a good practice player, liked by his teammates, and a decent backup. In this case, he will receive considerably less.

I have to believe that not every player seeking more money whether by staying or entering the portal is successful in getting more money. We know there are some players that are not picked up at all.

I think the "free market" is more at work than we think. Some guys entering the Portal are taking "pay cuts".when they land somewhere.

I also believe many players entering the Portal were told they would have no place on next year's team. In other words, they were cut.
