Football Strategy Question: Holding Back Plays/Schemes that work

Preface: coach Freeze is killing it. So this is more of a question than a critique.

It appears that we have stretches or games where we are offensively 'less effective'. Then it magically gets fixed. Compare LSU game to the State game last year.

Does holding back certain scheme or plays really make sense, or would it be more effective to just execute the hell out of what we do best.

Just a question.
