Well, it's here. Fall camp begins for us today, as we get our first media opportunity at 2 p.m. with Hugh Freeze and requested players right after that. We'll get coverage to you as fast as possible when it's complete. I've heard that freshmen will be off limits to media for the first couple weeks so they can acclimate. That's not uncommon. A lot of schools keep freshmen off limits until they play in a game, so I appreciate the access Ole Miss allows to the program. As a quick aside, Virginia Tech didn't even credential Internet sites for practice or game passes until this year, which is amazing and really stupid. I think the SEC sites forget sometimes how good we have it. Again, practice Saturday is at 9:45 a.m. and is open to the public. Media practice restrictions for the rest of camp aren't known yet. We should have a better idea today.
As you know, Laquon Treadwell is in town on a visit. He was high school teammates with current Rebel Anthony Standifer, and everything I've heard is that the visit has been great. In a vacuum that's not news. Let me know when a visit goes poorly, and I'll consider that news. Visits go well. However, there's more to it here. In situations like this, a team never knows beforehand if there's legitimate interest or if maybe Treadwell is just coming to see his buddy for a day or two. Considering his caliber, you roll out the red carpet and hope for the best. Early impressions are that there is serious legitimate interest, and the Rebels are in the ballgame. It won't be easy. Probably not the favorite or anything right now, but the hat is in the ring, and that's all you can ask. You have to hand it to the Ole Miss coaching staff for getting a foot in the door. The kid is a stud.
Keep an eye on Mario Alford from Georgia Military College. Jake Rowe from our Georgia site is clued in over there, and he alerted me to Alford yesterday. The JUCO offensive skillplayer has offers from Ole Miss, Arizona, Kansas and others, though we understand that his Ole Miss offer isn't currently committable. But as the year moves along, he's probably one to keep in the back of you mind. He really likes Ole Miss' offense, and it's clearly the closest option. I hate hand-timed 40s because they are usually so inaccurate, but he was timed below 4.3 by several different watches this week. Is he really a 4.3? Probably not, but he's definitely fast. He's 5-foot-9, 180.
Speaking of Georgia Military, big JUCO tackle Trenton Brown likely won't go public with his decision for a few weeks, but Georgia is the clear favorite. He visited Ole Miss the same weekend as Robert Nkemdiche and Derrick Green, but it sounds like the Bulldogs have a substantial lead. UPDATE: Brown has committed to Georgia.
Devante Kincade is expected to make his first trip to Oxford this weekend, joined by Skyline 2014 offensive lineman Ty Barrett. Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Mark Dodson may also make it down for the weekend. Reeves-Maybin has Ole Miss and Tennessee as his favorites and will decide on or before August 10.
