Guy from my home town was living outside of Chicago Illinois. He is well versed in the use of guns but couldn't have them in Illinois. Three months after he moved to Illinois he heard a noise around midnight. He walks to the living room to investigate and finds two men making there way through a window they had broken. He had no way to defend himself and locks himself in a bathroom adjacent to his bedroom. He calls the police, sits in the bathtub, and just waits in fear. Twenty minutes later the police arrive. He was fortunate that the intruders broken in, snatched what they could get their hands on and left.
The guy turned down the job and left Illnois. The point of sharing this story isn't that my friend was vulnerable without access to a gun, it's the fact that criminals were bold enough to break in knowing he was home and without fear of personal harm or recourse. They knew that he didn't have a gun.
