There are 3 things that stick out in regards to a scout on North Carolina.
I understand the 1/12 Quad one wins. But there wasn’t any opportunities in regards to who they were playing the last month to know whether they have improved or was it the competition. That’s a slippery argument to have when data shows one thing that is true but context doesn’t provide enough to know. They are hot regardless. You just have to play well this time of year or you go home. It’s that simple.
First key is transition defense. UNC will get out and try to get early offense. SDSU looked like they were defending in quick sand. They left early 3’s on the table all over the court in both halves. Getting back on defense and matched up and communicating can limit some of 3’s UNC has to take.
Second key is offensive efficiency. OM is going to have to take care of the ball better than it has lately and they are going to have to make some shots from deep. I don’t know if UNC can guard back to back games like they guarded last night. I don’t see OM being able to beat them off the bounce if they guard like that. So paint touches are going to have to be manufactured. If I was UNC I would throw some zone at OM as well. OM is a streaky team from deep. That’s why the offensive balance and efficiency is so important.
Lastly, OM can’t get out rebounded by more than 5. UNC is the more explosive and athletic team and they aren’t that big. But they are aggressive and can get hustle boards and 50/50 balls if your effort doesn’t match theirs.
Unc has been so inconsistent as a body of work for a season looks. But you can’t go by that. You have to look at how they have played lately and realize that they don’t play in a strong league yes, but you cant discount that bc they are extremely dangerous right now.
They remind me of Alabama but the poor man’s version. OM will slow this game down. Putting pressure on making sure you are efficient on offense and your early defense and half court kills can limit the possessions. Rebounding is key to those kills.
This is a game that I feel like Beard can circle. Beard talks a lot about OM being good and changing a national narrative. He’s mentioned it about 6 or 7 times in different pressers this year. It’s still UNC and that is the thing that Beard will use in regards to OM breaking down the door and Beard putting another stamp on what he is trying to develop as his OM brand. Now that OM isn’t favored, that is another Lay’s chip on the shoulders.
