@Neal McCready
I hadn’t thought about driving my Dad back-n-forth to the VA hospital in years (was 24 at the time). Would drive him home on Friday’s & back to hospital on Sunday nights. He’d already had a lung removed & now was treating brain cancer. The good news…it worked for him. Got 13 more years with my Dad.
Your story reminded me of the truly meaningful talks we had…just me & him. We had a good relationship before then, but…my dad really opened up a lot more during these trips. We really began talking to each other as friends.
Thanks to you, I shed some happy tears thinking about that time we spent together. Obviously, hated the fact he was so sick at the time. But…our relationship changed forever over that 2 month period.
I hope you’re beginning to understand the impact you have as a writer - not just this story either. Absolutely therapeutic.
