RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The No. 1 Ole Miss men’s golf team started the spring season strong, taking the 18-hole lead after round one at the Puerto Rico Classic. The Rebels shot a combined score of 16-under 272 and were led by a pair of bogey-free rounds of 66 from Cohen Trolio and Cameron Tankersley.
“Really impressed with what I saw from our guys in the first round out this spring” said head coach Chris Malloy. “If we can continue to clean up some short game mistakes and capitalize on par 5 scoring then we will give ourselves a chance to win this thing. Overall, very impressed with their fight.”
Trolio came out of the gates hot, birding his first two holes. He would go back-to-back on seven and eight, shooting five-under 31 on his front nine. Trolio would card a clean back nine with eight pars and one birdie on the par 3 16th. It marked his fourth round in the 60s this season.
Cameron Tankerlsey would also card a bogey-free 66, notching his eighth round under par this season. The Dickson, Tennessee native shot four-under over his front nine. Tankersley took advantage of scoring chances, birding two of the par 5s.
Michael La Sasso and Kye Meeks each shot two-under 70 in round one and sit inside the top 25. La Sasso shot even par over his first nine and finished strong with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18. Meeks dropped in three birdies on the day, marking his sixth round in red figures on the year.
Tom Fischer and Collins Trolio (ind.) both turned in scores of (+3, 75) after round one at Grand Reserve Golf Club.
