AUBURN, Ala. [/B]-- After waiting out a two-hour rain delay, the Ole Miss baseball team dropped 3-1 decision to Auburn in the first game of a weekend series Friday night, April 17. The setback to the Tigers (24-15, 6-10 SEC) ended the Rebels' (19-19, 7-9 SEC) three-game winning streak.
Freshman Henri Lartigue knocked in the only Ole Miss run in the ninth.
Ole Miss starter Christian Trent (5-4) went six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on nine hits and four walks. The southpaw also struck out five hitters and limited Auburn to just one run on a pair of bases-loaded jams.
Mitchel Babb pitched the final two innings for the Rebels, increasing the Ole Miss bullpen scoreless streak to 23.0 innings. The Rebel relievers have not given up a run in five-straight games. Individually, Babb has not allowed a run to cross the plate in his last 12.0 innings over seven appearances.
Cole Lipscomb (5-1) pitched a complete game for the first time in his career to pick up the victory for Auburn. The Tigers tallied nine hits throughout the contest, led by three from left fielder Damon Haecker. Melvin Grier added two hits, and the Rebels held Anfernee Grier, the SEC's leading hitter, to a 0-for-4 night.
Auburn recorded one run in both the second and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead. In the third, the Tigers had the bases loaded, and Trent looked to have gotten out of the inning with a groundball. However, an error kept the inning alive and allowed a run to cross the plate. One inning later, the bases were full of Tigers again with only one out. Nonetheless, Trent was able to get back-to-back outs to prevent Auburn from adding to its two-run advantage.
After the Tigers added another run in the fifth, Ole Miss attempted a rally in the final two innings. Two runners reached base in the eighth before Lipscomb got out of the inning without surrendering a run. Cloyd and Golsan led off the final frame with back-to-back hits to bring the tying run to the plate. With one out, Lartigue was robbed of a base hit at first as Cloyd scored to cut the deficit to two. However, Lipscomb ended the game with a strikeout to give the first game of the series to the home team.
Due to expected inclement weather on Sunday afternoon in Auburn, Ala., the Ole Miss baseball team will now play a doubleheader against Auburn tomorrow afternoon, April 18. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. CT, and both contests will be nine-inning ballgames at Plainsman Park. Fans can listen to the entire series on the Ole Miss Radio Network. All three games will also be broadcast on SEC Network+.
