Having only ever worked at one company since graduating, I've never given one but I've seen more than a few people come and go. Some people have spent the final 2 weeks and did a good job, a lot of others, especially younger hires. have been let go within a couple days of submitting their two weeks. I'm sure some of that is gaming the paycheck system, which is why I always tell people to put their two weeks in on the Monday of a new pay period. Some of it also not wanting to have to come back behind people and fix mistakes/laziness that people with two feet out the door did on projects and spending more money.
From an employee responsibility standpoint, our employee handbook says if we don't give a 2 week notice we will not be considered to have left in good standing. But, there's no language as to what that means or doesn't mean if you don't leave on good standing.
