Peach Bowl CEO quick hits

Ninth oldest bowl game but first bowl that was founded for charity and most charity dollars of any bowl. Last year Peach Bowl was ranked No. 1 student athlete experience nationally. We have a great fight with one of the top offenses in the country and the top defense in the country and a great QB and RB against a great defense. The SEC vs. Big Ten. Both coaches have been in our bowl before — James with Maryland and Lane with Tennessee and Alabama.

Congrats to the both coaches. The only losses in this game on the season are No. 1, No. 2, No. 6 and No. 7. Look forward to two great uniforms on the field in Atlanta.

Lane Kiffin quick hits

Couldn’t be more excited to be part of this great matchup and play a great university and matchup and it’s close to him. Fans can go to a great stadium and matchup. It’s a lot going on with bowl announcements and recruiting and visits but we’re excited.

I’m glad James went first. I didn’t know anything about the OC thing. I guess we need to prepare off the past two weeks. He obviously made a tough decision in the program’s best interest.

I don’t know a lot about PSU’s personnel yet. You guys think we watch more football than we do. If it’s not in our breakdown, we don’t see much. We have an early report and know they are great and great on defense and I was hoping they would opt out, but that’s all I know. I don’t see other conferences much.

I haven’t heard of any opt outs. I expected we don’t have any. We’re not in one of those years with first rounders coming out being concerned with injury. I don’t anticipate opt outs.

I just don’t think we have guys in the opt-out conversation. It doesn’t apply to us this year.

We didn’t have a watch party as a team. I was in recruiting meetings. I found out on the TV like all you guys did. Excited about it. It’s a great stadium and matchup, but it's not what you thought. We have visitors and meetings and weren’t focused on that.

The balance with recruiting and bowls is a huge thing and huge challenge. The portal also means your own guys potentially. You’re recruiting your own roster and trying to get next year’s roster. It’s not ideal. It's a different world, but we’re trying to work with the confines we’ve been dealt.

Wins and exposure matter. I see that with recruits. That we are in this position. We are trying to have an 11 win season. When players have success, it helps with recruiting. It’s all connected. This is a playoff game next year.

A lot of do with your lenses about the playoff. With the visitors today I asked them who should get in and I wondered about answers from different regional locations. You each have your opinion. I do feel for FSU and their players. They did everything they were asked to do. I really feel for them and Norvell. They had a great season and overcame a lot to do what they did.

I do think Baker will coach in the bowl game. I’m excited for JDB to get the job and call an offense and take that next step in his progression. We’re really happy for him. We’re working out how he can do both jobs through the game. We will have a tireless effort to find the best coach for the players we can. We’ll do the best we can for our players.

James Franklin quick hits

We are so excited to play in this game. Had a great experience last time I was here. Ton of respect for Ole Miss from my time in the SEC and for Lane. I’ve known him a long time. I’ve followed his career and we have friends in common. Great to watch Ole Miss play. They play an exciting brand of football. Two programs with strong brands and reputations and history. Also cool Penn State has never played in the Peach Bowl. Should be great experience and the matchup for the SEC vs. Big Ten in the 2 most respected conferences. Lane, I look forward to seeing you soon.

Penn State has a new OC the last two weeks. We made a change and we have co-coordinators the last two weeks and we have the person here who is new but it’s more just understanding how we have our culture and see our strengths and weaknesses. He’s ready to go when this is over. We’ll keep the co coordinators from the past two weeks.

If any of the Ole Miss reporters can ask Lane about strategy, that would be great and helpful.

Sitting around the hotel, I see highlights or games and I know some guys from recruits. We recruited Judkins hard and have respect for him. Outside of that, coaches don’t come up with a feel off highlights off TV or watching from a hotel. That’s different from the film we study. There’s not much I know. Lane has done a great job. Lane is great at scheme and we recognize that.

We’ll try to balance recruiting and bowl practices that are more like spring ball. It’s development. We’ll get into specifics of Ole Miss but nowhere ready to do that.

You hope the relationships mean the players use you in the opt-out decision. But with agents talking to the players, that’s the challenge. They are getting info and it’s not always accurate information.

The challenge is balancing the portal and the bowl. We have to take care of our current players with development and try to win the game. But at the same time you better be bringing in players from high school and the portal. You have to keep growing as a program. It’s a constant battle.

It depends on your lens how you feel about this year’s four team playoff. Big Ten and SEC each have their lens. We had an opportunity to go to 12 this year and it would have solved a lot of issues. You could make a lot of arguments and when we go to 12, we’ll argue with 12-15 like basketball. But the solution was to go ahead this year but that didn’t happen. There are always decisions and hurt feelings. I went through it one year. We won the Big Ten and another team went to the playoff.
