ND grad here with UGa grad gf, planning a trip to Oxford for the Ole Miss-UGa game this year. Looks like there aren't any hotel rooms, so we may stay as far as Memphis. Any suggestions for closer places to stay? Any suggestions for things to do, game-day activities and traditions to see? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If flying, Memphis or Tunica, MS casino hotels best bet. If driving, Tupelo (50 mi), New Albany (30 mi), or Batesville (20 mi) other possible options. Activities; don't miss the party in The Grove 2-3 hours prior to game. Square in Oxford has several good restaurants and bars. Wherever you stay, allow plenty of arrival time because traffic and parking (lack thereof) is terrible.

I hope you're not looking for 2* or better accommodations because in that case you're out of luck. I have stayed in Batesville and Tupelo before driving over in the past. Both are $hitholes.

I would suggest staying in Memphis and driving down early. As someone said earlier ITT , traffic will be bad so the earlier the better. The Grove has some weird rules regarding open consumption of alcohol so be careful. Also, buy your beer before you arrive in Oxford as they don't sell cold beer in stores due to some backwards law.

Enjoy kicking their @ss and don't engage with anyone after the game, their fans tend to get really drunk and irrational.

First, ignore Lord_ Douchebag, as we have way too many trolls on this site, and no administrators with the guts to dismiss them. I'd recommend staying in Tunica, where you'll have other entertainment options. When you arrive on gameday, just introduce yourselves to anyone with a tent in The Grove, and you'll be well taken care of. I've included a link that might be helpful. Hope you enjoy your trip.

Yeah, Tunica is quite a haul to Oxford. Just like Memphis is. What did I say that wasn't true ?

The way Ole Miss enjoys kicking yours. LMAO

Lord_Buttlick has spent plenty of time in Stankville, so he knows a Shathole when he visits one.

What's weird about a rule that people have to drink out of plastic cups? No broken glass anywhere is a good idea. Oxford sells cold beer now. Yes, most of those motels are 2 star but they are cheap and when all you want is a place to sleep after a long day they fit the bill. It's funny that a Dominos pizza delivery boy would complain about 2 star motels when he lives in a 1 star cellar.

Well, thanks to those who responded before this thread took a left turn. We'll be staying in Memphis and hope to spend as much time as possible walking the campus and checking out the Grove. Looking forward to it.

Any time Miss State trash come on this board you can count on a left turn. I guess they watch too much NASCAR.

You coming to the game this year Heckler? I think by the time the Egg Bowl comes around State fans and players will have called it quits. Both are in for a looooooong season.

I think by the Egg Bowl that Ole Miss will have made 2016 the first year of their self-imposed bowl ban LOL Still waiting for Ole Miss to release that 2nd NOA. Me and Lyman want to know how bad it is for the Rebs!

You're probably still waiting on the "hit" article too. Robertson is selling subscriptions by selling hate. He can't sell your team so he's selling hate. State fans are gobbling it up. I really feel sorry for all of you. Back when I was growing up I pulled for State every game but one. Now I pull for State to lose every game. State fans have become full of hatred and have lost all respectability.

Hey irishflu92, we are all not crazy. Seriously, Hampton Inn in New Albany is a wonderful place to stay near the campus. Only a half hour away. They take care of you. Plethora of restaurants and bars on the Square, or just off of it, and welcome everyone. And all are very good places at reasonable rates. Don't miss Proud Larry's which will have a Blues band for sure, or jazz. Prepare for a great time!

Some other towns that are closer to Oxford to consider for lodging for an Ole Miss game:

  • Sardis
  • John Kyle State Park near Sardis
  • Batesville
  • Senatobia
  • Enid State Park
  • New Albany
  • Holly Springs
  • Tupelo
  • Water Valley
  • Memphis
  • Tunica
  • Local homes/condos/apts. on VRBO

Also will you drive or fly to the game? If you drive, consider cities on your route. If you fly, consider departure times and city of departure.

Enjoy your trip!!!

Thanks again. We are flying to Memphis; we'll stay there on Friday night. I'd like to get to campus as early as possible on Saturday, walk and explore the campus and check out the Grove. We will probably spend some time tailgating with a family friend of my gf, who's a hug Reb fan, but whom I don't know. If there are any other game-day traditions or hot spots, please let me know. I'm just looking forward to checking out a campus and football scene I've never experienced before and hoping not to get abused by overzealous Rebs. As an ND fan, I do get my share of abuse from opposing fans when I visit (I'm looking at you, Tennessee), but I don't know what to expect in Oxford sporting a UGa shirt.

I'll be sure to check out Proud Larry's. Nothing like some Southern cooked blues.

Georgia fans are the best opposing team fans that come to Oxford. You'll be treated well as long as you don't act poorly.

You may wish to try and get a room at the Peabody. There is a little rib joint down an alley close to hotel that I am fond of. Don't know if Memphis (a.k.a. Tiger High) is playing in town that day, but I don't think if they are that blessed event would cause the Peabody to fill all their rooms.
