Looking to dip my foot into the Rolex pool. Eyeing a submariner date:

Now where it gets interesting is that it appears you can only buy new Rolex from authorized dealer, all of whom are selling this watch for about 40% higher than that.
Guessing there is no way around this??
On the used market there appears to be a lot of quality watches but unsure how to navigate:
Who are reputable sellers?
How important are box / papers?
Appreciate any insight.
