Thought Neal brought up an interesting point in his mailbag about taking a step back to take a step forward, pertaining to switching from a portal heavy approach to a more traditional HS approach.
To me, the portal seems like the new JUCO. You can add older, more physically ready guys to fill a gap, but it’s difficult to build a consistently competitive roster filled with those guys.
To compensate for going so portal heavy over the last 2 years, that probably means we have to go more HS heavy in the next couple of classes. We’ve already seen evidence of that. But, that could mean a year or 2 of growing pains as the HS kids get acclimated. I’m not sure Lane has the patience (or will) to do that and I’m almost certain the fanbase wont put up with a 1-2 year dip in Year 5-6.
Feels like something’s gotta give. These are tomorrows issues, I get it, but I’ll be interested to see the final results from the “portal king”experiment in a year or so.
