Sounds like you think there may be coaching changes during the off season. Prospects get it, too, in that they see players like Strong, Caldwell, Linton, Ordway and others sitting on the bench. In the prospects' mind, high caliber players don't sit on the bench and that will happen to me. These guys are not coached OR the defensive scheme is over-complicated. Perhaps the "keep it simple" expression applies here. Effective coaches get the point across and it doesn't appear to be happening on special teams, LBs, DBs, or on the offensive line. I slightly disagree with the latter. I knew Luke while at OM. The guy is tough, and determined. I highly doubt he doesn't know his stuff considering he's been in the business for years.
Knowing your stuff and being able to get the most out of your players and have them develop are two different things. I can teach you anything in the world about football but I couldn't coach.I think Lukes blocking schemes aren't helping our line either. We get no push, something has to give. You can't tell me that Baylor has better lineman than we do, yet their scheme makes holes. There are multiple ways to block the same play and instead of manning up and trying to muscle people off the ball we need to have influence blocks, pull guards through holes and multiple other options. Auburn has a power running game out of the spread and they don't have any better Lineman that we do either.
There should be and the alumni will push for it. It's not a situation like Cut was because Freeze is winning. At the least we need a real DC. That could go a long way. I believe we will have the same running game next year whether Akers comes or not because that is our offense and our running scheme isn't a priority. If we go 9-3 or 8-4 we may see one or two changes.
Step back for a second and rewatch our running plays. Do you believe that Akers would have had more room than Judd or Brazley? It's not that our backs are bad, teams with worse backs are running for more. The space to run just isn't there.
I get you. Over the several years I've watched football, the teams that are most successful have a balanced attack. To place our running game in the back seat is a huge mistake. The more I think about it, the more I think you are right about Luke.
We are balanced, go look up the stats. We run about 47% to 53% pass. That's pretty ballanced
Right, I get that. But it's the timing of when we run. Say it's 3rd and 2. We pass the ball. This has happened several times. Obviously, it's a running play. We pass to Ingram instead. Sometimes it works, but it's precarious. And close to the goal line- Chad either passes it or runs it in. Only occasionally do you see a RB run it in. Like you well stated, the OL must be developed better-the talent is there. When the situation presents itself, we must have the assets to take advantage of it. And that's to overcome short yardage to either score or get a first down using the running game. Not often happening-is there no trust on the OL?
