HooReb attended Thursday's game in Nashville and was kind enough to send over some observations to supplement's Brian's off-site coverage.

Carter Holton doesn’t normally need much help. The super sophomore wasn’t as sharp Thursday night as he was in the SEC tournament last May, but he was still very good. Holton relied on a heavy fastball between 92-95 mph and a nasty off speed pitch to limit the Rebels to two runs on 6 hits in a 12-2 win. Reliever Bryce Cunningham gave up one hit in two innings of work.

Ole Miss pitching wasn’t sharp, but a lackluster defense compounded the issue. Four errors combined with a potent Vandy offense spelled disaster in the SEC opener for the Rebels. Peyton Chatingier committed his first two errors since February 2022. SS Jacob Gonzalez and third baseman Ethan Lege each committed one.

If you’re looking for silver linings, Calvin Harris was 4-4. Another positive hidden by the gaudy score was that the pitchers only yielded two walks. Mitch Murrell was good until tiring and yielding a home run. He left a runner on base who scored.

The wind was blowing out hard to straight-away center field. It seemed as if it would bode well for the vaunted Rebel offense. Vanderbilt entered the game with the lowest team batting average in the conference; you couldn’t tell it. Seventeen hits and four home runs pummeled Rebel pitching, walking them off in the eighth inning. Ole Miss only worked one walk on the night.
