Doing evaluations on each quarterback that participated Saturday at the Steve Clarkson Dream Maker QB Retreat in San Diego. Here is Shea Patterson:

Good: Patterson was clearly head and shoulders better than every quarterback at the Steve Clarkson Dream Makers QB Retreat on Saturday in San Diego. The only quarterback who was in the same ballpark was 2017 four-star Tate Martell. Both went through drills at top-end speed but Patterson was the smoothest, most-polished quarterback at the event.

Early on, during speed outs and vertical passes, Patterson zipped the ball right on the money time and time again. What’s so impressive about his delivery is that it’s so compact, no wasted motion and the ball flies off his hand with a perfect spiral almost every time. It gets out so fast and it’s so accurate.

During rollouts, either to his right or left, Patterson was consistent with his passes and he wasn’t lobbing the ball to receivers. He was quickly running to his right or left and then delivering the ball with a lot of pace right on the numbers.

Patterson seemed equally comfortable dropping back from under center and throwing to targets or from the shotgun. Clarkson wanted the quarterbacks to throw directly to the sideline on out routes and have the receiver tap their feet in bounds (basically throw to a spot and let the receiver get there) and on almost every throw Patterson put it perfectly where it needed to be. It would have been bad to throw to the inside of the receiver during that drill (closer to the field and not the sideline) and Patterson did it right nearly every time.

On verticals, he put the ball on the outside of the numbers and on a line – instead of inside where the safety could come over and pick it off or nail the receiver.

In closing, Patterson had the best day – clearly – of any quarterback at the event.

Bad: Being overly picky here but a few times on quick throws (when Clarkson wanted the QB to get it out as soon as possible) and sometimes when Patterson went into his drop he would reset his feet. Clarkson wanted the guys to go 1-2-3-throw, one fluid motion, and Patterson a few times went 1-2-3-reset to get his feet under him and then throw. Also, a few times while rolling out against the grain (when righties roll left and have to throw across their bodies) Patterson threw some passes high. Other than those minor hiccups, he had a fantastic day.

Recruitment: Patterson said after the camp that he’s fully committed to Ole Miss and not considering any other schools.
