BOX SCORE
I thought Pine Bluff was a little better,as it played a 2-1 game against Auburn and hung in with Tulane and others, but the Golden Lions are just as awful as I remember them and understand why all eight wins have come in SWAC games. The Rebels rolled 11-1 and snapped a four-game losing streak. The competition was poor, so take anything else said with a grain of salt, but here are some quick impressions that might actually mean something moving forward.
If Ole Miss is going to play SWAC RPI bombs at least play the in-state ones, in my opinion. But better yet why not play Delta State? I know it doesn't happen very often, and I don't mean all the time, but why not? The attendance would be better because of the novelty of it, the competition would be just as good as Pine Bluff I'd guess, and best of all it wouldn't be an RPI hit. Games against non-D1 schools don't count in the RPI. South Carolina played -- and lost to -- Francis Marion, a DII school. I think that would be a good idea occasionally.
Evan Anderson went 3.2 innings and got the win. He allowed one hit, struck out one and didn't allow a run. The freshman threw 48 pitches and 33 strikes. He's spotted really well in recent outings. He retired all nine batters he faced against Southeastern Louisiana in his other start this season. There's some development happening with him. More poise, more confidence, and he's controlling the game fairly well when on the mound.
JB Woodman hit his first career home run on Wednesday. He's struck out 17 times (4 walks) in 53 at-bats That needs to get better, but he does seem to be handling things better recently. Wouldn't be shocked to see him get more at-bats.
Jacob Waguespack pitched 1.1 innings and allowed one unearned run, but it was a bit of a struggle. Two walks, a strikeout and a hit were in the eight batters faced. He threw 20 strikes in 35 pitches.
No matter the pitching, execution is execution. Ole Miss had been struggling with runners at third, but the Rebels went 5-of-6 scoring runners at third with less than two outs on Wednesday.
Will Allen, Errol Robinson, Sikes Orvis and Austin Anderson all had two hits.
