All of Ole Miss' coaches, with the exceptions of Dave Wommack and Maurice Harris, were on the road recruiting and not with the Rebels' squad Thursday as the team wrapped up open-date work. Ole Miss practiced for about an hour inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium Thursday, a session that was built around some scrimmage work for seldom-used walk-ons, scout-teamers and freshmen being redshirted.
"There were a couple of guys who showed out out there," Wommack said, referring specifically to walk-on running back Carlos Davis and walk-on defensive back Ontario Berry. "That's huge. Maybe you can use those guys in a kicking game situation or something like that. I think it's great for everybody."
Wommack also had praise for freshman defensive end Temario Strong.
The Rebels got some work in on their next opponent, Arkansas, this week as well, Wommack said.
"I think we got somewhere around 100 reps on Arkansas, which is good for us to get a nice head start," Wommack said. "We don't have a plan finalized, but we've got a real good idea what we want to do against them. We've had some extra time to study against them also. I think that was good."
Ole Miss will take the weekend off before reconvening Sunday to begin game-week preparations for the Hogs.
"I think if they can get away for a couple of days, it just refreshes them a little bit," Wommack said. "It goes by fast, but they need that in a long season like this."
