After the 1984 games in Los Angeles, NBC got the broadcast away from ABC. They overpaid so much that they had to fill out six-hour broadcast with profiles of athletes that nobody wants to see and other “features” that nobody wants to see in order to justify more ad sales. (Snoop interviewing gymnasts—really? Just show me the dang competition.) And that’s been their template ever since.
Unless Chris Collinsworth is still working on Sunday Night Football, I’m not sure I can name anybody who works at NBC Sports. They’ve filled the gap with people who sound like they’ve been on the job for about six weeks, and “reporters” from NBC News who know nothing about sports—to say nothing of Carrie Underwood, Peyton Manning and poor ol’ Mike Tirico. (Bob Costas wasn’t much better all those years, but at least he knew how to crack a joke once in a while.)
It’s hard to watch, so mostly I don’t.
