Offense: Overall pretty good. They produced Friday and Sunday. Saturday was abysmal. Missing our chances with bases loaded let Arkansas stay around.
Defense: It cost us. Errors are the main reason we lost. It let a bad inning spiral into a terrible inning Saturday. The error in the 9th killed us Sunday.
Pitching: I’m undecided on my thoughts for the overall. All 3 starters did well enough but not having any length put too much stress on the bullpen.
I’m not bullish on McCausland, but it’s a small sample. Tookoian can’t play because he can’t throw strikes. I don’t see Johnson as an SEC arm, but again, small sample size. Ketchum needs time to recover still. I’m not too high on Dennis either. Calhoun hasn’t pitched enough to know… but if you can’t sniff the field after we were depleted, it says the story. All that to say Canney needs more opportunities. He’s mature, doesn’t get rattled, and fights.
Canney showed something. Waters did too for an inning, that may be his limit for now. I don’t know if Hooks was just first SEC game jitters or if he isn’t ready. But you can’t kick the ball around and expect a freshman pitcher to compensate for it. Jones… we needed a better showing, he missed his spots.
Spencer was electric Friday, and good Sunday. He was running out of gas and the error erased an out and upped the pressure. I’m not really holding him accountable for the 9th. He should have already been out of it.
The top of Arkansas lineup is just a murderer’s row. The top 5/6 are killers. The bottom of their order fights like rip. Taking pitches, fouling off pitch after pitch. They exhaust a pitching staff. Their averages aren’t high, but they work you to death, then the lineup flips and they just kill you.
