I will say upfront, i think Lane’s behavior over the last month, and honestly every year his name comes up, has been ridiculous and hurt both his and Ole Miss’ brand. This year, for the first time, he cost us not just on the recruiting front, but also on the field.
But I think the narrative that this will be an annual thing is now over. Whether we should have or not is now academic, Ole Miss has stepped up big time. Lane is now one of the highest 10 paid coaches in the country and has over $10 million NIL money just for football. Moreover, the IPF will be finished in the fall bringing our facilities, outside the stadium, on par with anyone’s.
So the false narrative that you can do more at an Auburn has been put to rest. Kids today don’t care who won in 2010, they care about practice facilities and NIL, and we have both. And for Lane to get even a comparable job, much less a better one, he is now going to have to win huge.
So I don’t think we should worry about what Lane will do in the next coaching carousel, his behavior this year along with our finish this season will have severely damaged his brand for any school not as crazy as Auburn. We are now in the same boat and, if Lane wins big enough for him to actually have higher paying options with more facilities and NIL money, then we will probably all be happy for the ride.
