Is social media to blame for these shootings?

I feel like these shooters almost get glorified whenever a mass shooting happens. We hear their name nonstop for days, their faces are plastered all over Facebook and Twitter. We never even really see the victims (understandably for the family), but the shooters get so much attention, leading to copycats and others wanting the fame or to cause mass hysteria.

More importantly, has social media made us almost numb to an extent with these situations? When reading about the school shooting, an article brought up the church shooting in Texas a few months back. Admittedly, I had completely forgotten about it, and that’s an issue. We talk nonstop about these mass casualties for a few days, and then something else comes along and takes all the attention away, whether it be Olympics, a new sex scandal, etc. Then a new shooting happens and we just regurgitate the same conversations over and over. It’s an incredibly sad and frustrating cycle that has to be broken at some point.
