Judd Utermark discussed how Ole Miss' defense failed Hunter Elliott on Wednesday night and he bailed them out. He had praise for Florida starter Liam Peterson and said he was thankful to get a couple of barrels. Mostly, he focused on Ole Miss' pitching, saying the front-line guys "make our jobs easy."
Ole Miss reliever Mason Morris said he's seen his velocity go up from last year and added a cutter. He praised Joel Mangrum, staying in the weight room and fixing a few mechanical things, such as raising his arm slot.
Ole Miss assistant coach Mike Clement said he was worried entering the game against Peterson, given that the Florida starter has struck out 87 opponents in 65 innings.
"That doesn't necessarily play into our hands," Clement said.
Still, he said getting three in one inning with Elliott, Morris and Spencer on the mound "felt like eight (runs)."
Clement compared Elliott to former Ole Miss star Doug Nikhazy, both in appearance and effectiveness.
Clement said Utermark has gotten more comfortable at the plate by playing every day.
"Man, he's been good," Clement said.
Clement said Wednesday's game was an example of how good Ole Miss can be when it has a full arsenal.
Hunter Elliott said he feels stronger this time of year, crediting Mangrum and the strength staff for that. He said he found something in a bullpen a few weeks ago.
"Something kind of clicked and we've been going with that, kind of hammering that," Elliott said.
Elliott had high praise for catcher Austin Fawley, noting that Fawley really cares about the pitchers.
Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco praised center fielder Isaac Humphrey for his routes to the ball, which make up for a lack of elite speed. Bianco said he also appreciates Humphrey's offensive consistency.
"He's had so many big hits," Bianco said. "If you just look at his stat line, his RBIs. He's hit .300 all year and there hasn't been a lot of ups and downs. There have been a ton of RBIs and a ton of big hits."
