The early signing period and the portal has really changed firing a coach. If you do not hire immediately, you are screwed basically two recruiting classes. Your better players take the money and transfer taking a known over a TBD new coach and all the high school players sign elsewhere in early signing period.
Example look at Bama who lost the equivalent of a #1 signing class to the portal when Saban retired and MSU who lost both a recruiting class and best players to the portal setting them up for this 2-10 season.
It's not just the payoff that gives AD's a pause going forward. They almost have to have their man before using the hatchet in this environment. I think that is the reason we are seeing fewer firings this season or at least later until after the signing period.
We got a lot of our best players last year off of teams that changed coaches. TAM, Bama, Florida, Wash and rumors about Ark making a change. So who are we pre-portaling from UNC and how will less coach changes effect our ability to portal players next year?
