The selection process is beyond stupid. The media gets 870 votes, made up of 145 voters from each of six regions of the country. Previous Heisman winners get a vote There are 57 of those. And the fans get 1 vote.
So the media picks the winner. And why should the media get to pick a winner? Because, of course, they know the most. This is from the Heisman website- “The task of designating the most outstanding college football player is a daunting one, so a crucial decision was made early on to determine the best group of individuals to make that choice. It was decided that sports journalists were the most logical group for this task. As informed, competent and impartial observers, they comprise the vast majority of the electors.”
Out of those 870 media voters, I guarantee you that 600 of them can’t draw up a play. Far from informed and competent. Dan Wolken and the like are always impartial. Not.
The award is supposed to go to the most outstanding college football player in the country. But the way that these morons have voted in the past, they think that the country's most outstanding football player must be a member of one of its best teams. And is it even possible that such a large group of informed and competent and impartial people can really believe that the best player in the country every year is either a quarterback or a running back? A few examples-
Charles White- There were 9 guys on the USC team that were better than White, much less the rest of the country. Those 9 guys combined for 46 pro bowls. White had zero. Anthony Munoz and Ronnie Lott were some of the best at their position in the history of the sport. Neither one got a single vote. USC QB Paul McDonald got 92 votes that year. You mean to tell me that not one single supposed football expert in the entire country noticed that Munoz might have been better than McDonald?
Andre Ware- The product of a gimmicky defense, but he wins the trophy. Even Dee Dowis (remember him?) got 145 votes. Cortez Kennedy was unbelievably dominant. He couldn’t be blocked. But he got zero votes.
Charles Woodson- The one year where the QB was the most outstanding player, the media gives it to a DB.
Danny Wuerffel- Of course he was better than Tony Gonzalez and Orlando Pace and Walter Jones
Jason White- maybe the worst the voters have ever done. He wasn’t even close to being the best player on his team. Tommie Harris by a mile. And how about Larry Fitzgerald? Even Eli? And then you have people like Sean Taylor and Vince Wilfork and Jonathan Vilma that combined for ZERO votes.
And how about this Reggie Bush nonsense. Reggie would like to have his trophy back. But the suits in New York said that he first had to go to all the former Heisman Trophy winners and to get them to sign off on it. Can you imagine Bush calling the likes of Johnny Football or Cam Newton or OJ Simpson and asking those idiots to sign their name so that Bush could get his trophy back?
Just so stupid. All of it.
